Energy Saving Trust steps up its sustainable transport credentials.

An energy saving organisation better known for its push to reduce domestic fuel consumption is stepping up its campaign to promote sustainable transport.

The region’s Energy’s Saving Trust is giving out free pedometers to people vowing to switch some of their petrol power to foot power – and one of their key targets is next month’s Birmingham Climate Change Festival.

The Festival, held across the city from June 5th til 7th coincides with World Environment Day and offers a range of activities aimed at showing how citizens can contribute to a greener Birmingham.

One of the highlights of the weekend is the BRMB walkathon which takes place on June 6 along the number 11 bus route. As one of the major sponsors of the event, which is raising funds for the city’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the impartial Energy Saving Trust will be giving out pedometers to people taking part.

They’ll also be inviting residents to complete free travel energy surveys on the day, which will identify ways to adopt sustainable transport.

Lynn Melling, manager of the Energy Saving Trust West Midlands advice centre explained: “The aim of the walkathon is many fold. It has obvious health advantages, engenders community spirit and is raising money for an excellent cause. But from our point of view we’re keen to promote the sustainable advantages of walking to make the city, the country and the world a greener place – and save you money.

“We want to push the environmental merits of ditching the car as often as possible and using leg or pedal power instead. Even reducing your weekly mileage by five miles by walking or cycling could save around 85 kg of CO2 and £40 in yearly fuel costs.”
