Council urged to sign recycling agreement
Written by Emily Thomas
A new government-backed scheme has been launched in a bid to boost recycling rates across the country. The Local Government Association (LGA) has teamed up with the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) to kick-start the initiative.
Both organisations are now calling on councils to commit themselves to a specially-designed ten-point Waste Collection Commitment. By signing the voluntary agreement, local authorities would be obligating themselves to providing regular and reliable recycling and waste collections.
To formulate the contract, WRAP surveyed around 2,000 households to uncover how residents feel about existing recycling services in their area.
Phillip Ward, director of local government services at WRAP, said: "Our research shows residents up and down the country have a common view about what they expect from a collection scheme. We believe that these objectives are widely shared by local authorities and most of them will be prepared to make the commitment and take the opportunity to review their services against its principles."
It is hoped that the move will improve people's satisfaction with recycling waste management services and subsequently drive forward local recycling figures.
